India’s silly claim over Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan’s continued policy failures
It is amusing to see the paranoia of India vis-à-vis Gilgit-Baltistan, my motherland! The NEWS reported on 3rd March that the Indian government had written a letter to Pakistan, asking it seek NOC before building power projects in the AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan region. The Indian official, Zehra Akbari, had reportedly declared Gilgit-Baltistan to be an "integral part" of India.
The Indian government, while making such hollow and silly claims, always conveniently brushes aside the aspirations of the people of our region, not to mention the history of our ancestors’ armed struggle against the Kashmiri Dogra occupiers and invaders. They seem to forget, every now and then, that our ancestors had liberated over 72,000 square kilometers of land, after shedding blood and sweat in the battle field, where they spent almost one year, fighting the occupiers and invaders.
The monument of martyrs at Chinar Bagh, close to which stands the toothless Gilgit-Batlistan Legislative Assembly, is a testimony of the victory of our ancestors and the defeat of the Dogra occupiers. Whether the occupier of that time signed a document of accession to any country or not is none of the concern of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, because the value of an invader and occupier’s ink is naught in front of the blood and sweat of our ancestors.
It is good that the foreign office of Pakistan has rebutted the Indian claim. Our so-called representative and its visionless leaders, whose statements fill the regional newspapers otherwise, lacked the sanity to condemn the outrageous statement, which is reflective of the Indian’s colonial aspirations.
However, will a rebuttal by the Pakistani foreign office suffice? Will it make for the deprivations of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and their crisis of constitutional identity which the Indian government is attempting to capitalize?
The answer is a big NO!
Thousands of statements and claims later, after the passage of six and a half decades, our region still stands in a state of limbo, faced with the menace of militancy and terrorism, poverty and illiteracy and corruption and injustice.
The people of Gilgit-Baltistan need have been demanding and deserve better treatment from the government and state of Pakistan. Our people have suffered a lot due to flawed policies of successive regimes and the situation is worsening with the passage of time, because the people, especially the youth, getting frustrated with the unjust treatment. It is in the interest of the state of Pakistan, which majority of the region’s population still loves, to resolve the longstanding political and constitutional issues, by giving more autonomy and power to the locals.
