The heinous murder of the young
Shahzeb Khan in Karachi caused uproar in the media. Such was the power of the
media’s outcry that the Supreme Court sprang into action and ordered the arrest
of the accused “within 24 hours”. One suspect has already been arrested. This
might be a sign of awakening of our collective social conscience and, if so, it
augurs well for society at large.
What is worrisome, however, is
that similar, or even more heinous, crimes in other parts of the country,
especially in Gilgit-Baltistan, do not get much media attention. Take, for
instance, the case of the police shooting in the Aliabad town of Hunza valley,
in which two unarmed protesters – father and son – were shot dead by the police
in cold blood.
There was neither any uproar in
the national media nor did the Supreme Court, or any higher official of the
country, take notice of the crime or come into action. A judicial investigation
ordered by the now judge-less Supreme Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan has
proven to be ineffective so far. The police officer who ordered firing on the unarmed
IDPs, displaced due to the damming of the Hunza River, has been promoted to the
rank of superintendent police (SP).

Scores of people are being murdered in Karachi, KP and elsewhere. Nothing moves as fast as serving DSP son's case. One law for the poor and another for the well to do persons.
Noor Muhammad, your pointations is valid but Shahzeb's case caused more uproar in media as it was reflective of the hegemony of the remnants of colonial rule. Doesn't this ask for answering the call of Dr.Qadri to knock out these forces out of the corridors of power before next election?
I quite agree with Mr Noor.
There is another case by the name of Malik Riaz vs Arsalan, I wonder when
will the courts decide on "24 Hours notice" to police and other
connected organisation to finalise the proceedings and let people know the
truth of the matter.
